The Spanish rule lasted three hundred years until, through the half a century popular uprisings, independence was attained. The Bolivian state was officially declared independent on August 6 th , 1825, in La Plata (currently Sucre ) and got its name in honor of the liberator, Simon Bolivar. The Pacific War (1879/1884) between Chile and Bolivia , results in a great territorial loss of the latter – the border with the ocean, with severe repercussions on the economy.

Nowadays, Bolivia is among the poorest countries in South America, but the incredible landscapes of the Andes surrounding it and the traces of the old civilizations make it rich in point of culture, as it represents a unique destination for daring and independent travelers.
